LGR – Epic Pinball – DOS PC Game Review

PC pinball can be such a hit or miss situation… so when it turns out as solid and enjoyable as Epic Pinball, you have to take notice! The makers of Gears of War and Unreal got it right. Epic Pinball for MS-DOS computers Download the shareware v1.1 and v2.1 here: www.classicdosgames.com

I grew up with this.
Awesome review. I used to play Epic Pinball when I was a kid, and I loved it so much. I played the Android table the most.
The music sounds like Nine Inch Nails lol
Even the music it’s fun to hear it!
I really love this game, it’s so fun!
Thanks for the feedback. By the way, would you happen to know of any cheat in Epic Pinball that gives you additional balls on the table at once, i.e. multiball? I’ve always thought it would be fun just to have a ton of balls on the table at once just to try it — but I’ve only ever seen a cheat for getting additional extra balls.
I’m a bit prone to hyperbolic sarcasm and such, but yeah, I really do think the game is pretty close to perfect for a pinball game of the time period. I’m fond of Excalibur (and not just for the music) although not so much Magic. But even with that one, it’s still a pretty fun challenge to get even a few hundred points more each time you play. They have their flaws but that turns into charm for me. Minus the third add-on pack of tables somehow, just not a fan of those mostly.
I love Epic Pinball, but I’m curious if you’re sincere in that you find it perfect. I’m just curious about your opinion really and don’t intend this to be an argument that you should yield to my opinion. In particular, do you really find the table “Excalibur” and “Magic” to be “totally sweet”?
I find these tables to at best be tedious and trivial (compared to e.g. Android). The music on Excalibur is great though, but that alone doesn’t make it fun for me. Just my opinion though.
I loved this game and burned hours on it. I seem to remember owning two different versions… One that allowed only Android & Enigma. And the other that release you showed on CD with Android featured on the front. I could be remembering wrong… All I know is that I burned HOURS on Android (or maybe Super Android…) hoping to bring that blue robot to life. I never did, but I also spent some time on Enigma. Don’t remember playing the others much. THANKS FOR THE NOSTALGIA!
Hyperbole is notoriously difficult to portray in text
I’ve only ever played the DOS version of Fantasies, so that’s all I have to compare to Epic. Still, I feel that Epic Pinball is the best PC pinball game from the time period I’ve played. Fantasies is fantastic indeed, but it doesn’t match the feel of the tables of EP in my eyes. The goals are probably the only area that I’d say EP is lacking in with certain tables, but the overall experience and amount of awesome tables makes up for it.
The “fact” stuff was meant to be hyperbole and nothing more, but seriously, if you haven’t played Fantasies is a while (or ever) I really suggest you go back and try it. Epic Pinball was made as a homage to the Amiga’s Pinball Dreams, whose PC port admittedly sucks. Pinball Fantasies improves upon everything from Dreams, the tables are three screens tall instead of two, the tables have more flippers, goals and modes and the table designs and music are just superior.
Oh, and thanks for the reply! Love your reviews.
Sorry, 99konondrums, but your opinion has blinded you. There is no absolute truth when it comes to subjective opinion.
The review is fine and all, but the unquestioned absolute king of DOS pinball is Pinball Fantasies. There is no substitute. Epic Pinball is a pale imitation in comparison. Sorry LGR, but nostalgia has blinded you, this is truth.
There is a “Super Android” remake table for the awesome “Future Pinball”:
And a great Space Cadet (Microsoft / Maxis) remake.
So Nostalgic. Favorite DOS game next to DOOM.
I have played this much, but extreme pinball was my favourite, actually only one table. The rockband table it is awesome and with superb music
I prefer the original shareware music for the Android table.
I have a Disc with Jazz Jackrabbit and then the shareware of this game; I absolutely love it.
Godam, I miss the golden age of PC gaming
So many great titles from this era..
The way you feel about “Epic Pinball” is the same way I feel about “Raiden”.
I’m playing this on RGB Classic Games right now.
god i loved enigma as a kid. played that one for hours and hours.
